Destination Bay of Islands

Marked by picturesque beaches, secluded coves and 144 unique islands, the Bay of Islands is one of the most popular holiday destinations for both New Zealanders and international visitors alike. Known as the birthplace of New Zealand, The Bay of Islands is steeped in historic significance while maintaining a relaxed holiday ambiance.
The Bay of Islands enjoys a subtropical climate perfect for outdoor and aquatic activities. In the 1930s the American writer and big game fisherman Zane Grey helped establish the region as an international destination for big game fishing through his many sporting articles highlighting the uniqueness of the Bay of Islands.
Beyond fishing, the Bay of Islands also offers sailing, diving and snorkelling to experience the exquisite display of marine life. Appreciate the big marlin, whales, dolphins, penguins, gannets and many other species aboard a cruise or dive trip. A family holiday to the Bay of Islands would not be complete without a swim with the local dolphins and a boating trip to the ‘Hole in the Rock’ – a large rock outcropping near Cape Brett with a hole large enough to boat through.

Getting There & Away
Situated in Northland, the Bay of Islands can be reached by one hour, chartered helicopter or fixed wing flights. The closest commercial airport to the Bay of Islands is in Kerikeri and is serviced by Air New Zealand and Salt Air. The Bay of Islands is a scenic four hour drive from Auckland.
Paihia
Paihia, once a small village of five houses and a church, this town is now the hub of the Bay of Islands. Throughout the year, Paihia hosts a number of festivals celebrating both European and Maori heritage. In May/June Matariki (Maori New Year) takes place and gives visitors an opportunity to learn more about Maori culture.
Also in May is the annual Paihia Country Music Festival with performances in Paihai, Waitangi, Haruru Falls and Russell. In August, the Bay of Islands Jazz Festival is held over a weekend at the same four venues – a perfect opportunity for any jazz aficionado to relax and enjoy the Bay of Islands.
Waitangi
 |
Overlooking the Bay of Islands and only a short drive from Paihia is Waitangi, where Maori chiefs and European representatives signed the Treaty of Waitangi – considered the founding document of New Zealand as a nation. |
Russell
Russell became the capital of New Zealand before the title was moved to Auckland a year later. The town of Russell was the first European settlement in New Zealand – mostly servicing sailors and whalers – and originally having a poor reputation as a magnet for rowdy and unscrupulous behaviour.
Today Russell is a quaint and charming town and a peaceful escape in the Bay of Islands. Wonderful waterfront restaurants and craft galleries are woven into the restored colonial buildings combining the past with the present. Visitors interested in history should visit Christ Church, New Zealand’s oldest church (which still carries the bullet holes from the Maori Wars) and Pompallier - the rammed-earth Catholic Mission that houses a working bookbinding, printing and tannery.
Filled with unique adventures, peaceful retreats and family activities, the Bay of Islands is an exceptional holiday destination.
